(Ta’m e guilass) A middle-aged man drives his truck in the outskirts of Tehran looking for someone to help him out with a very specific and unusual request. Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami‘s minimalist philosophical film engulfs the viewer in it’s atmosphere and raises the most simple, yet complex questions about life, death and the human condition.
Filmed in a series of long takes, well composed and precisely timed. Unexpected and memorable ending.
Won the Palme D’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Despite this, the film was met with a polarized critical opinion. Most critics praised Taste of Cherry greatly, calling it a masterpiece, others, however dismissed it as being boring due to the slow editing and minimalist directorial method. It has since been reevaluated and praised more, considered by many to be one of the greatest films of the decade and of all time.
